Importance of Increasing the Vocabulary For a Fiction Author
There is a vocabulary that fiction authors use regularly. For you to have a big number of words to choose from when writing, you need to learn other vocabularies. When you are a fiction writer it is best if you use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing. How well you put together the words and the words themselves make up for good writing. When you are reading a novel that is engaging, it is easy to get into it. Reread the novel again after reading and enjoying it. Examining how the work is written is the goal. The aspect of writing is where you should focus on, they include how the plot and characters were developed and the technical aspects like grammar. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
It could be their punctuation, spelling and the difference in the words that are being used. For example, among is used by the Americans and amongst by the British. There are standard rules that you should stick to when writing for either the American or British readers.
Fiction authors can and should expand the base of the vocabulary that they use. Doing this is possible when they are reading another author’s work. A new vocabulary that you come across should be noted. Despite it being general knowledge, most authors do not do this. It is a logical thing to do but is only one of the many strategies of how you can build your vocabulary. Consider getting a notebook or use any other means you desire to make categories that suits your needs. Be keen when listening to people talk, or when reading and even conversations on the TV. Be mindful of verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns being used. There are words that you already use, the ones that you did not know and those you never thought of using, you will discover either if this. Keeping a list of the words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use is important. For example for the eyes, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room’.
Taking note of such words and phrases gives you the ability to be creative in the description of what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters. Such a list will help you rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary. The first draft you make should use this list.
