The grief associated with losing an uninsured home to fire can be softened for as little as $9 a month. That is according to chairman of the public relations committee of the General Insurance Association of Barbados (GIAB), Anton Lovell, who has expressed concern about the number of Barbadians whose uninsured houses continue to go up in flames. A check with Barbados Fire Service Sub Officer Stanley Absalom yesterday revealed that for the year, there had been 42 fires at residential houses, nine commercial buildings, four derelict structures and nine other fires to structural buildings such as workshops and garages.

Lovell said that while it was heartbreaking to read the stories of persons’ uninsured properties being damaged, it was a situation that could easily be avoided. He said while most people saw insuring their properties as an added expense, it was actually quite affordable. The general manager of Co-operators General Insurance disclosed that fire insurance covering $50 000 cost less than $10 a month in some cases.
